Geving maintains Petaluma All Pro Points lead with hard charge to
fifth place feature finish By Bill Sullivan
PENNGROVE, CA (5-10-08) - Penngrove's Alissa Geving returned to the
likes of Petaluma Speedway Saturday night to resume her quest for the
2008 All Pro Point Series championship aboard the Chick-O-Motorsports,
Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises Sprint car. Once again the 16
year old third generation talent overcame her share of adversity early
in the night and rallied her way to an 5th place finish in the feature
event.
Geving started the evening with qualifying when she turned a 12.8
second lap on the the challengins 3/8 mile oval. The qualifying time
placed her second on the roster out of the 15 cars in competition. The
bridesmaid qualifying time also positioned her in the third row of the
8-lap preliminary heat race.
In the heat race, Geving was attempting to work her way through slower
traffic when she was racing on the high side of the surface and
collided with another competitor before collecting David Lindt Jr. who
unavoidably became involved in the incident. With minimal damage to
the #3x Maxim Sprint car, Geving restarted the race from the rear of
the field and rallied back to finish in the fifth position.
Missing the inversion for the feature event by just one position,
Geving started the feature event in the sixth row and was forced to
work her way through traffic to reach the front of the field. After
passing Jeremy Burt on the start of the race, Geving dueled with
Roberto Kirby for the seventh position. With an extremely rutted track
surface, much of the race resembled that of a rodeo rather then a
sprint car race and at one point Geving fell victim to the conditions
when she struck one of the rutts, slowed and allowed Kirby to resume
the 7th position.
With a number of delays throughout the night, Saturday's feature event
was shortened by five laps. During those final circuits Geving
overtook Kirby for the second time in the event and then muscled her
way past Brandon Davis and was closing in on veteran driver David
Lindt Jr. when the checkered flag waved. Despite starting to the rear
of the field, Geving rallied to the 5th position, her fifth top sixth
finish in the season at the track she calls home.
"Tonight I had to come from the back and the track was super rough, I
wish I had found my line on the top earlier in the night," said
Geving. "I'm running for the points championship and the can be so
dangerous so I try not too push it too much, but tonight I knew I had
to do something. I really wanted to win this for my Mom tonight for
Mother's Day but I think she's happy when the car comes off the track
in one piece. "
Following Saturday's event, Geving undoubtedly will continue to
maintain the point lead in the weekly All Pro Series championship
campaign. David Lindt Jr., a five time champion here, is currently in
the second position and gained two points on Geving with Saturday's
fourth place finish. The 2008 championship campaign will surely heat
up in the weeks to come between Geving, the 16-year-old driver inher
sophomore season and Lindt, one of Petaluma's winningest drivers along
with Alissa's father, Gary Geving who also raced with Lindt prior to
passing the driving duties to Alissa last year.
"I am so focused on the points right now so I feel very dedicated to
my goal of winning a championship," added Geving. "I want to finish
every race and to do that I need to stay focused. I'm very proud to be
leading the point series over past champion David Lindt Jr., it's an
honor."
This Saturday, May 17, Alissa Geving and her Chick-O-Motorsports team
will return to Petaluma Speedway to continue their campaign for the
2008 track championship. In two weeks the team looks forward to
traveling to the north state where they will spend two days competing
at Silver Dollar Speedway during the Silver Dollar Fair and the
Hoosier Tires Civil War Race Series.
